managed to recover from that. here's romney and obama today. >> i think it's a -- a -- a terrible course for america, to stand in apology for our values. >> there's a broader lesson to be learned here, and you know, governor romney seems to have a tendency to shoot first and aim later. and as president, one of the things i've learned is that you can't do that. it's important for you to make sure that the statements that you make are backed up by the facts and that you've thought through the ramifications before you make them. >> we will get into all of that tonight. i promise you will we will do the campaign in detail. but before we do, in an election year, presidential politics has a tendency to overshadow everything else. there's a tendency to only care about real genuinely important events in terms of their effect on the campaign. but what happened over the last 24 hours in libya and cairo needs to be understood on its own terms first, because the ramifications could be with us for quite a while, no matter who is president. and so we should start the show tonight on a note of humility

like us. look. they are even tweeting like us. flattery will get you everywhere with the obama administration. the white house was so charmed that they threw egyptian hosnimubarak, an ally who provided us with intelience and in a region smoulder with american hatred under the bus. we didn't know who would replace them. the muslim brotherhood wear suits and they look pretty good 18 months later, the middle east is on fire. our flag is burning in 20 countries. why do i feel like i had seen this movie before? american embassies on fire and american flags desecrate americans kill chants in 20 nations of death to america? didn't i see this movie during the carter administration? are we that gullible? are we that weak? it wasn't two months ago that hilary clinton talked about obama forgives one billion of the billions that egypt owes us. are we so so weak that the president of egypt who of ared two billion dollars. two billion of our taxpayers dollars and takes him two days to condemn the murder of an american ambassador and three other officials? are we that weak to ignore four assa

that left the u.s. ambassador christopher stevens and three staffers dead. on wednesday, president obama vowed to bring to justice those responsible for the killings, which he said would not repeat ties between u.s. and libya. >> we reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others, but there is absolutely no justification to this type of senseless violence. none. the world must stand at a to unequivocally reject these brutal acts. already, many libyans have joined us in doing so. this attack will not break the bonds between u.s. and libya. >> the obama administration has dispatched an elite group of marines to the libyan capital of tripoli and six u.s. warships toward the libyan coast in a bid to ramp up security of u.s. personnel. we'll have more on the protests throughout the middle east after the headlines. the response to the deadly attack in libya has entered the presidential campaign after republican nominee mitt romney is the tragedy to attack president obama. hours before the protests erupted in cairo and benghazi, the u.s. embassy in cairo issued a statement attem

, a mob attacked the israeli ambassador in cairo and required president obama to intervene with mr. morsi directly. the fact is the united states embassy knew that there were some demonstration that was going to be likely around the embassy. the fact that the police were somehow ordered to vacate the premises shall i say and i'll say this as politely as i can. was patently unacceptable on the part of the morsi government and sanctioned by the united states. >> ambassador ginsburg, in your statement that it was a realistic response or a reasonable response on the part of the embassy in cairo, i'm wondering, get your take why you think the obama administration then walked it back and said this was not the shared belief of the president. >> well, i frankly, think that, clearly, events started getting out of control of what was supposed to be a passive statement on the part of perhaps the public affairs office of the u.s. embassy. you have to understand the embassy in egypt is huge. there's all sorts of divisions and very likely that the statement came out of a staffer at the embassy. >> righ

the obama administration insisted the assault was a protest that got out of hand. fox news confirmed u.s. intelligence did indeed know it was a terror attack of 24 hours of that evening. bill: yesterday the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff and the defense secretary finally statedding the obvious. >> it was a terrorist attack. as we determined details of what took place there and how that attack took place that it became clear there were terrorists who planned that attack. that's when i came to that conclusion. >> day after or was -- >> took a while to really get some of the feedback from what exactly happened at that location. >> there was a thread of intelligence reporting that groups in the environment in western, correction, eastern libya, were seeking to coalesce but there wasn't anything specific. bill: well, peter doocy is live in washington drilling down on the specifics. peter, if the administration knew it was terrorist attack in 24 hours, why did they not just say that? >> reporter: we heard from administration officials there is ongoing investigation and more details wi

. >>> thanks very much. happening now, president obama on this day he has some time to raise money in person, but only time for a phone call with israel's leader. more criticism coming in. we're also looking at the obama administration's evolving attempts to explain who's responsible for the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. is the confusion becoming a political liability? and mitt romney says he has a little secret. you're going to hear him predict he'll win a state most experts think is safely in president obama's column. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." >>> we're down to just 39 days until the presidential election. in about 20 minutes the president begins a series of fundraisers right here in washington. those are the only public events on his calendar today. yet this is the same day the president didn't have time for a face-to-face meeting with the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu who's in new york. instead they spoke by phone. here's cnn's white house correspondent dan lothian. dan. >> reporter: wolf, the white house always stresses that the presid

starting in october. i don't think this obama campaign are going to let it go quietly through the three debates. >> we withanks >>> good evening, americans. and welcome to "the ed show." i'm ezra klein in for ed schultz, and there is 55 days until the 2012 election. the tragic events in libya today have turned into ugly politics in america. this has genuinely been one of those 24-hour periods that could reshape not only the presidential campaign, but american foreign policy going forward. we'll have all the details. as ed would say, let's get to work. today was an incredibly important day in the u.s. presidential race. in response to the awful attacks in libya, mitt romney said something that was genuinely unbelievable. and then more amazing, he doubled down on it. this is the kind of thing, the kind of day we could look back on the 2012 campaign and say, yeah, romney just never quite managed to recover from that. here's romney and obama today. >> i think it's a -- a -- a terrible course for america, to stand in apology for our values. >> there's a broader lesson to be learned

obama for calling the latest setbacks in the middle east bumps in the road. >>> the president is focusing in on world peace as he prepares to address the united nations. he's also making time to woo women voters. >>> and a tv first, u.s. marines are giving new details about one of the costliest attacks on u.s. airpower in decades. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." >>> with only 43 days to go until the presidential election, mitt romney is starting to zero in on a handful of battleground states that will decide this election. one of those states is colorado, where romney just wrapped up a rally at the pueblo airport. our national political correspondent jim acosta is standing by live. jim, what happened? >> reporter: wolf, with the calendar shrinking and the debates fast approaching, mitt romney is starting to barnstorm through crucial swing states like here in colorado. he knows he has serious ground to make up. today he tried to do just that on the subject of foreign policy. it's not debate time yet, but mitt romney was looking for one on foreign policy in fro

, the obama campaign combines mitt romney's words with some potentially devastating pictures. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." >>> as of today we're just 40 days away until the presidential election. and for the second day in a row both mitt romney and president obama have been campaigning in the same battleground state. this time it's virginia where both men targeted the same group of voters. let's walk over to cnn's national political correspondent jim acosta who's been out on the campaign trail watching what's going on. another dramatic day. virginia, virginia, virginia. pretty important place. >> that's right. a rare visit to washington for me. but it's good to be home, wolf. all politics is local. so it was no surprise to hear both candidates hit on national security themes today in their speeches in virginia. but the state is much bigger than that. it's really a republican firewall for mitt romney. in battleground virginia, both president obama and mitt romney pulled out the heavy artillery before a group of veterans, romney slammed the president for the massive defense

that the sprinted is here. they have to step it up to catch barack obama but also to keep the republican base that he needs happy and shows he's got the necessary energy to go through with the campaign. >> gregg: has there been some criticism that the romney campaign hasn't been campaigning hard enough? >> yeah, when the president is campaigning couple times and there is close fund-raisers. there have been complaints that the fund-raisers didn't make him accessible enough to the public. so they opened up the fund-raising event opened to the cameras, but you have to remember, donors are already in the camp. this week is the big ramp up for it. part of what the are trying to do is set the tone for the debate season. this will be a great deal of emphasis for the economy and jobs. he will expand it to more broader choices. tight frameworks this is really a reelection of barack obama and three years of failure hasn't been able to bring about the change of promise. you'll hear homicidal talking about that and saying some 14 years ago he wanted to redistribute wealth. he will be saying the president

economy. you have to have a strong economy. >> president obama was rallying supporters in virginia beach. that was a couple minutes ago. he talked about creating opportunities for everybody. >> we don't believe anybody is entitled to sucssthis country. we don't believe government should help folks who aren't willing to try to help themselves. but we do believe in sothing called opportunity. we do believe in a country where hard work pays off, where responsibility is rewarded, where everyone gets a fair shot and everybody is doing their fair share and everybody plays by the same rules. we believe in america where no matter what you look ke, no matter who you are, no matter where you come from, no matter who you love, u n make it if y. [ cheers and applause ] that's the country i believe in. >>> jim acosta is covering the romney campaign. jim, one of the interesting things back in 2008 in covering president obama, you knew that there was a sense that he could possibly win when people started showing up in virginia. i mean that was really th turning pot. they thought perhaps we have this th

. president obama and prime minister netanyahu attended the united nations general assembly in new york, but at different times. the white house insisted it was a scheduling issue, not a snub. no meetings, no handshakes. but today a follow-up phone call that a senior administration official told cnn lasted more than 20 minutes. in a statement released by the white house, the conversation included "a range of security issues," the president reaffirmed his commitment to israel security. and the two leaders were in full agreement on preventing iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. prime minister netanyahu has been pressuring the u.s. to lay down a so-called red line on iran that would prompt military action. at the u.n. he used a prop to drive home his point. >> a red line should be drawn right here. before iran completes the second stage of nuclear enrichment necessary to make a bomb. >> reporter: while some have accused the prime minister of pressuring the president to help gop nominee mitt romney, mr. netanyahu has said his actions are not tied to the u.s. political calendar. the white

, but he is willing to listen and trying to do what he says mr. obama has not been able to -- lead. watch this. >> you may not agree with me on every issue. and the american people may not agree with me on every issue. but i don't think i have been called anything besides a strong leader. know how it lead. i will bring america together. i will not divide america. i will bring us together to accomplish great things for our great nation. >> to put the rough week of last and the week before that behind them, they are accelerating the battle on the ground, tonight he goes to colorado. and during the course of all of this, their idea is that it will come down to 6 to 10 states stad in most of the state, mr. romney is in a tie or trailing by a point or two, within the margin. every one of the states that will decide the election were won by barack obama four years ago, so romney knows he has to take them back and put them into the red column. >> it's been sometime since mitt romney has been in colorado, why so long? >> 7 weeks and it's a key battleground state. that's a long time for the princi

a statement in which he issued an apology to u.s. president barack obama and the american people for the attack on the embassy today, saying this was unacceptable and ordered yemeni security forces to launch an investigation and prosecute anybody they found involved in this to the full extent of the law. this was quite worrying today. for one reason, the u.s. embassy compound in sanaa is one of the most protected sites. not just in the city of s aanaa, the capital of yemen, but practically in all of the country of yemen. i've been to yemen several times, been to sanaa several times. i've been to the u.s. embassy. this site is not easily accessible to anybody. i spoke to activists in sanaa who said they were watching what was going on from rooftops of nearby buildings. they say they were absolutely shocked that this crowd, marching toward the embassy, was able to get as close as they did to the main gate and then that they were actually able to breach the compound. they were flabbergasted by this. they can't understand how yemen security could allow this to happen. in the ensuing

: i believe president obama gave a statement yesterday where he said it would work with the libyans to bring the people who attacked the embassy to justice. u.s. marines are going to the embassy in tripoli, but that is window dressing. i think the libyan government pose a real desire for america to be engaged in libya. i am sure there will be an effort to track the group behind the attack. libya is facing a similar challenge to morsi. libyans are devout muslim people. in fighting gaddafi, many happen to be more hard-core islamic fighters. i think the libyan officials in government are struggling with that. their tendency is to blame events like the death of ambassador stevens on gaddafi loyalists. that is probably the case. host: thank you for your time this morning. we appreciate it. from the washington post, a florida pastor is asked to withdraw film backing. what should the u.s. response be? patty on the republican line. caller: i think we should -- i do not think we should apologize. this is just a ridiculous move to blame a silly little film. the president goes out and apologiz
